Leather is a scent that recreates the smell of animal leather. Leather is tanned hide, and it's easier to imagine the scent if you think of new leather shoes or bags, or the interior of a leather-covered car. Perfumes that use natural leather fragrances are very rare, and leather-like fragrances are usually recreated by combining several leather-like fragrances. Natural fragrances include birch tar extracted from incompletely burned birch bark, castoreum, an animal fragrance that is a beaver secretion, and synthetic fragrances such as isobutylquinoline. Leather notes are often blended into chypre, tabac, and fougere types of perfume, and go well with dry scents.
